The men's leather jacket guide

Straight answers to the questions we hear most, from fit and leather types to wearing in a new jacket.

How a leather jacket should fit

The shoulder seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder bone, not past it. Sleeves should end at the wrist bone with your arms relaxed, and you should be able to zip up over a T-shirt or a fine knit without the front pulling. If one of these is off in your usual size, choose made to measure.

Leather or suede?

Smooth leather is the more practical choice: it shrugs off light rain and wipes clean. Suede is the same hide with a brushed, velvety surface. It looks softer and more relaxed but marks more easily and should be kept out of heavy rain. Many people own one of each: leather for everyday wear, suede for dry days.

What full-grain leather means

Full-grain leather keeps the outer surface of the hide, so it shows natural marks and grain. It is the strongest part of the hide and develops a patina over time. Lower grades are sanded and coated to look uniform, which often makes them feel stiffer. Our Harrington jackets are made in full-grain leather.

Croc and alligator embossed leather

Embossed leather has a reptile pattern pressed into the leather with heat and pressure. It gives the look of croc or alligator without using exotic skins, and the pattern stays sharp with normal wear. The Executor car coat and our embossed biker jacket both use this finish.

How to wear a men's leather jacket

Keep the rest of the outfit simple. A biker or café racer works with a white T-shirt, dark jeans and boots. A Harrington or trucker sits well over a shirt or a crew-neck knit. On colder days, a longer leather coat goes over a suit or a heavy knit. Let one piece stand out at a time.

Wearing in a new jacket

A new leather jacket can feel firm for the first few weeks. Wear it often and it will soften at the elbows and shoulders and start to follow your shape. If it gets wet, let it dry slowly at room temperature, away from radiators, and condition it now and then. Our care guide has the details.

Buying guide

Men's leather jackets, made to order

Every men's leather jacket at Wild Leathers is cut and sewn after you order, in real leather or suede. Choose your usual size from S to XXL, or send us your measurements and we will make it to fit you at no extra cost.

Why a made-to-order leather jacket?

Most leather jackets are made in bulk and sized for an average body. Ours are made only after you order, so you choose your size, or give us your exact measurements, before any leather is cut. That way the jacket fits the way you want it to.

Men's suede jackets

Suede is leather with a soft, brushed finish. It looks more relaxed than smooth leather and feels lighter to wear on milder days. Our men's dark brown suede biker jacket keeps the classic biker shape in a warm brown nap. Suede is best kept out of heavy rain, and our care guide explains how to look after it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Are your men's jackets real leather?
Yes. Every Wild Leathers jacket is made from real leather or real suede.
How does made to measure work?
Select Made to measure on the product page and enter your measurements. If you are not sure, leave them blank and add the jacket to your cart, and we will email you to take them before we start. Made to measure costs nothing extra.
How long does delivery take?
Each jacket is made after you order. Dispatch takes 9–14 days and delivery usually takes 12–18 days.
Do you deliver outside the UK?
Yes. UK delivery is free. Delivery to the US costs £25, and to the EU, Canada, Australia, the Middle East and the rest of the world £30. Most countries do not charge import duties, but some, such as Canada and Switzerland, may collect import charges on delivery.
Can I return a jacket?
Yes. Standard sizes can be returned within 30 days for a refund or an exchange, and the customer pays return postage. Made-to-measure pieces are made for you and cannot be returned.
How do I choose the right size leather jacket for men?
Choose your usual jacket size. If you are between sizes, or have broad shoulders or long arms, made to measure is the safer choice. Our size guide lists body measurements for every size.
Should a men's leather jacket be tight or loose?
Snug, but not tight. The shoulder seams should sit at the edge of your shoulders, the sleeves should end at your wrist bone, and you should be able to cross your arms without the back pulling. Leave room for a shirt or thin jumper underneath. A biker jacket should sit at your belt line, while a car coat or blazer can be a little more relaxed. Leather softens and moulds to you with wear, so a close fit on day one is normal.
How do I measure for a leather jacket?
Use a soft tape and measure over a thin layer. You need four measurements: shoulder, across the back from one shoulder point to the other; sleeves, from the shoulder point to the wrist bone with your arm relaxed; chest (bust for women), around the fullest part, under the arms, with the tape level; and length, from the base of the collar at the back down to where you want the jacket to end. Our size guide shows where to measure.
