Guide

The leather jacket buying guide

Practical advice on picking a style, a leather and a length, and on getting the fit right first time.

Choosing a jacket style

Start with how you will wear it. A biker has the most attitude and the most hardware, while a café racer or racer keeps the front clean and sits neatly over knitwear. A Harrington or trucker feels casual and easy at weekends. Coats and trench coats add length for the office, and a blazer suits smarter outfits where a biker might look out of place.

Smooth leather or suede?

Smooth leather is the practical choice for everyday wear in the UK: it copes better with a light shower and wipes clean easily. Suede has a soft, brushed surface and a warmer, more relaxed look, but it marks more readily and prefers dry days. Plenty of people own one of each, keeping suede for weekends and leather for everything else.

What embossed croc means

Croc-embossed leather is real leather pressed with a crocodile or alligator scale pattern, giving the look of an exotic skin without using one. The texture catches the light, so it works best on simple shapes such as a cropped biker, a collarless jacket or a car coat. Care is much the same as for smooth leather: condition it now and then and keep it dry.

Cropped, hip or longline?

Cropped jackets finish at or above the waist and pair well with high-waisted trousers, skirts and dresses. Hip-length styles, which include most bikers, truckers and Harringtons, are the most versatile and suit almost any height. Longline pieces such as car coats and trench coats reach the thigh or below and give more warmth and a smarter outline. Made to measure lets you set your own length.

Layering through UK seasons

In spring and autumn, a leather jacket over a T-shirt or light knit is often all you need. For winter, allow room for a jumper, or pick a warmer option such as the quilted puffer, a shearling collar or sheepskin. Mild summer evenings suit a Harrington or suede trucker. If you order made to measure, think about what you usually wear underneath.

How made to measure works

Select Made to measure on the product page and enter your shoulder, sleeve, chest or bust and length measurements. If you would rather leave them blank, add the jacket to your cart and we will email you to take them before we start. There is no extra charge. Ask someone to hold the tape for accuracy, and remember that made-to-measure jackets cannot be returned.

Buying guide

Real leather jackets, made to order

Every jacket in this collection is cut from real leather or real suede and made to order after you buy it. Nothing waits on a warehouse shelf: your jacket is made for you, in a standard size or to your own measurements at no extra cost. Browse men's leather jackets or women's leather jackets, or use the guide below to compare every style in one place.

Why choose a made-to-order jacket?

A good leather jacket is worn for years, so fit matters more than with almost anything else in your wardrobe. Because we only start once you order, we can work from your shoulder, sleeve, chest or bust and length measurements. That avoids the usual compromise of sleeves that are slightly short or a body that is slightly loose.

Shop by jacket type

Suede jackets

Suede has a soft, brushed surface and a more relaxed look than smooth leather. Choose the dark brown suede biker or the suede trucker above, and look out for new women's suede styles in new arrivals.
